Dorothy Hamilton (3/31/14) DBRF #13

2014-dorothy-hamilton-fatal-dog-attackKAUFMAN (CBSDFW.COM) A woman was found dead at her home in Kaufman on Monday afternoon, and police believe that pit bulls are responsible for the killing. It was around 4:45 p.m. when authorities were called to a residence in the 1400 block of East First North Street.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered 85-year-old Dorothy Hamilton dead in the living room of her home. Investigators also found a pair of aggressive pit bulls inside of the house. A statement released by the Kaufman Police Department on Tuesday stated, “It appeared that the animals had attacked Hamilton.”

Authorities said that the dogs were being held in a bedroom, but it looks as though they broke down the door in order to attack the woman.

The victim’s son had been keeping a group of pit bulls at the home for several months. *A total of eight pit bulls — including the two dogs thought to have attacked Hamilton — were taken from the property. There have been no charges filed in the case at this time.

An autopsy will determine Hamilton’s exact cause of death.

*While the no kill philosophy may look nice on paper, there are often ignored issues and problems. The concept of never euthanizing shelter animals often leads to animal cruelty, hoarding, and the placement of dangerous animals in homes.

In North America, from 1982-2013, Pit Bull breeds and mixes have seriously attacked 2,990 humans that resulted in 1,777 maimings and 275 deaths.

POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DOG BREEDS

This is a list of dog breeds that have a history of being potentially dangerous to people, especially children. Daxton’s Friends for Canine Education and Awareness understands that any dog has the ability to bite or inflict serious harm to humans. This list consists of several dog breeds that have a higher than average number of recorded human fatalities. Please use extreme caution if you choose to bring one of these breeds into your home. Rental communities and homeowners insurance may restrict many of the dog breeds on this list due to the likelihood of a serious incident.

Pit Bulls, Mastiff, and Rottweiler lead in fatalities and are listed first. The rest of the breeds are listed in alphabetical order:
